Fairtrade

15 years ago the first products bearing the Fairtrade mark hit the shelves. Thanks to its supporters, the Fairtrade movement has gone from strength to strength and today shoppers can choose from more than 4,500 Fairtrade certified products.

Harriet Lamb, Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation says: ‘Fifteen years ago our dedicated campaigners told us of the excitement they felt when the first Fairtrade products appeared in their local shops. Now we are calling on people to help us re-create that early excitement by encouraging everyone to fill their whole shopping basket with products from the Fairtrade ranges.’

Fairtrade facts

  • Fairer Future: More than 7 million people in Africa, Asia and Latin America benefit from Fairtrade - farmers, farm workers, and their families.
  • Fairtrade fans: If 15 people recruit 15 friends and relatives to the Fairtrade movement this month, and then they each recruited 15 people - and then they each recruited 15 people - that would make a fantastic 50,625 new Fairtrade supporters.
  • Fairtrade fabric: Since the introduction of Fairtrade certified cotton in 2005, annual sales have risen from a humble 200,000 to a marvellous 7.79 million in 2008.
  • A massive 72% of the UK public now recognise the Fairtrade Mark (TNS September 2009).

Fairtrade Fortnight 2010 will be held from 22 February – 7 March 2010, and is expected to be the biggest celebration of Fairtrade so far. We’ll let you know how Hibiscus will be celebrating and taking part.
